The DMAB flag

Assigned Male At Birth (AMAB), also seen as Designated Male At Birth (DMAB) or Male Assigned At Birth (MAAB), is an assigned gender for those who have external sex traits that were identified as male. It is used as a way to refer to the sex on one's birth certificate or to discuss medical issues that are primarily faced by AMAB individuals without making assumptions of one's sex, body or gender identity.

When an individual is born, they are said to be male based on the presence of a penis or a clitoris over a certain size. The individual's internal structure is not checked, including a vagina or chromosomes. Some intersex individuals who were AMAB only discover that they do have a vagina when they are older and some AMAB individuals don't have XY chromosomes.

Traits commonly found in those who are AMAB include:

  • No vagina or uterus, however some who were AMAB were born with a vagina or uterus
  • A penis or large clitoris (PWHP), with some intersex conditions the different between these can be unclear
  • Descended testes and scrotum, although sometimes testes never descend (cyrptorchid), are underdeveloped, or are removed later in life (agential)
  • The capacity for spermatogenesis, unless if sterile or without some of the anatomy listed above
  • Has testosterone as their natural primary sex hormone
  • Chromosomes that are XY

AMAB individuals who were born with all of these traits are considered dyadic or wolffian, though some dyadic individuals may lose some of these characteristics later in life. Not all individuals who were AMAB were born with all these traits, in which case they may be considered intersex. Some intersex individuals were AMAB because they appeared externally male and their condition was no obvious without genetic testing or was not noticed until later in life. Some intersex individuals were Coercively Assigned Male At Birth (CAMAB), meaning they were medically altered without their consent to fit the sex binary.

FAMAB

AMAB individuals are often raised with the assumption that they will identify as cisgender men, however AMAB individuals can be any gender and can have any gender presentation. AMAB men are considered cisgender men. Transgender AMAB individuals are most commonly assumed to be trans women, however non-binary AMAB individuals may also identify as trans. AMAB individuals who identify primarily with femininity may be called transfeminine.

Other terms for intersex AMAB individuals include Intersex Assigned Male At Birth (IAMAB) and Forcibly Assigned Male At Birth (FAMAB).

Flags & Symbols[]

The AMAB flag was created by acro-pluris on the Tumblr blog Beyond-MOGAI-Pride-Flags on October 15, 2020. The blue and red stripes represent cis AMAB individuals and trans AMAB individuals. The yellow and grey stripes represent AMAB individuals who identify as gender modalities other than cis or trans.

The flag for trans AMAB individuals was created by an unknown user on or before August 23, 2015. The dark red represents trans women, light red represents those who identify partially as women, white represents agender individuals and anyone who lies outside of the male/female spectrum (abinary), purple represent those who identify as men and women or are in between men and women (androgyne/ambinary), and light blue represents those who identify partially as men.

The IAMAB and CAMAB/FAMAB flags were made by the deactivated Tumblr user plurgai on or before March 21, 2021. Alternate IAMAB and CAMAB/FAMAB flag were redesigned by Tumblr user interarchival on December 27, 2021. There are no known meanings for these flags and all posts have since been deleted.
