Straight ally

Straight ally flag, the most common ally flag

Allies, or Straight Allies, are cisgender, heterosexual/heteroromantic, allosexual/alloromantic (cishet) individuals who are not part of the LGBTQ+ community, but support the community. An ally acknowledges that LGBTQ+ individuals face discrimination and thus are socially disadvantaged, supports LGBTQ+ rights, and challenges homophobia, transphobia, etc.

Trans ally

Trans ally flag

Not everyone who meets this definition identifies specifically as an "ally," and not all cishet individuals are allies.

The "A" in "LGBTA+" does not stand for "Ally," rather it stands for asexual, aromantic, agender, abrosexual, abroromantic, androgyne and many other LGBTQ+ identities that start with "A."

History & Coining[]

It is unknown when the term "ally" was first used, however it has been around seemingly since the events of The Stonewall Riots.

Flags & Symbols[]

The straight ally flag was created sometime in the late 2000s, but the specific origin is unknown.

The trans ally flag was made by an unknown individual, but has been adopted and used by trans advocacy groups such as MaineTransNet and SuitUpMaine.
