Kenochoric is an umbrella term and individual gender that revolves around the concept of kenopsia, the eerie atmosphere of a place that has been abandoned. Genders under its umbrella and kenochoric itself can also relate to liminality, loneliness, nostalgia, distortion, darkness, nonhumanity, fogginess, disconnect, and a huge amount of similar ideas.
Common traits found in kenochoric genders include:
- A connection to things like liminal spaces, voids, darkness, vast concepts (ocean, space, etc.), distortion, or similar.
- A lonely, empty, eerie, or melancholy feeling.
- Some kind of disconnect from gender. This can mean genderlessness, an empty or absent feeling, gender apathy, a distortion of one's gender, or just a general disconnect.
- An unstable, hard to define, hard to name, or generally "unstable" relationship with gender.
- A strange, nostalgic, foggy, wistful, etc. feeling.
- A sense that one's gender is not human, or that it is unable to be defined with human definitions (or any definitions).
The term kenochoric is separate from other umbrellas such as xenogenders or aesthetigenders, though many kenochoric genders may be considered a part of these umbrellas. Kenochoric is a unique concept that covers a wide variety of experiences, and there is no specific way to identify as kenochoric or genders under its umbrella.
Kenochoric also has terms for alignment and quality. Genders that are kenochoric in alignment are known as kenic genders, and genders that are kenochoric in nature are known as KEIN, kenous, or kenoine genders. Those who identify as kenochoric can also have other alignments and forms of presentation too.
History & Coining[]
Kenochoric was coined by Tumblr user kenochoric on November 18, 2020. Other genders that now fall under the kenochoric umbrella already existed at the time and since then a variety of resources such as a Tumblr archive and carrd exist to document kenochoric terms. These are linked in the resources section of this page.
The term kenochoric stems from the word kenopsia. Kenopsia is 'an eerie, forlorn atmosphere of a place that’s usually bustling with people, but is now abandoned'. It can also be loosely tied back to the word choric, which refers to a chorus, something that may be a part of a kenochoric individual's aesthetics. It was originally called kenocoric, but was changed because it did not suit the nature of -coric terms and 'kenopsiacore' does not currently exist.
Flags & Symbols[]
The kenochoric flag was created on the same day of coining, its colours represent the following:
- Black: Void, absence, emptiness, and darkness
- Dark purple: Disconnect with gender, obscurity and a difficulty to properly define itself
- Purple: Vast concepts and places, such as oceans and deep space.
- Light purple: Liminal spaces, transitional spaces, the “boundary” between what was and what is.
The kenochoric symbol was created by Tumblr user mourningmogaicrew on August 13th, 2021. It was based off of the gendervoid symbol.
